Arabic Language and the Quran
The linguistic medium of divine revelation and its unique features
The Quran was revealed in Arabic, chosen for its clarity, eloquence, and deep-rooted linguistic structure. Classical Arabic, especially Quranic Arabic, differs from Modern Standard Arabic and other dialects in style and vocabulary. The Arabic root system (jadhr) forms the basis of its morphology. The Quran's language is distinct in its literary and phonetic qualities, preserved through the science of recitation (qiraat), including the seven canonical readings.
Languages of the Prophets — Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Coptic
Linguistic Contexts of Key Prophets in Abrahamic Tradition
The prophets of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity communicated in various Semitic and regional languages reflective of their historical and cultural milieus. Adam is traditionally considered the first speaker of a primordial divine language. Ibrahim (Abraham) and Musa (Moses) are associated with Hebrew, the language of the Tawrat (Torah). Isa (Jesus) is linked to Aramaic and Syriac, the lingua franca of the Levant during his time, while Musa’s era in Egypt also involved the Coptic language among the local population. Muhammad’s revelation was in Classical Arabic, the vernacular of 7th-century Arabia. These languages shaped the transmission and preservation of divine scriptures and prophetic teachings.
