زينب بنت جحش
umm al-muʾminīn
591 CE – 641 CE(aged ~50)
Seventh wife of the Prophet ﷺ. Cousin of the Prophet — her mother Umayma bint ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was his paternal aunt. Originally married Zayd ibn Ḥāritha (the Prophet's adopted son and freedman); after their divorce, the Prophet ﷺ married her by direct command of Allah (Q 33:37) — abrogating the practice that prohibited a man from marrying his adopted son's ex-wife. Famous for her piety and generosity — she worked with her hands and gave her earnings in charity. The Prophet ﷺ said of her: "The fastest of you to follow me [in death] will be the longest in arm [most generous]." She was the first of his wives to die after him.
