ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah
ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah was a prominent 4th generation hadith scholar from Kufa, renowned for compiling one of the largest hadith collections, the Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah.
ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah belonged to the generation following the Sahaba and Tabi'in, living during the late 2nd and early 3rd Islamic centuries. He was based in Kufa, a major centre of Islamic learning, and was known for his vast compilation of hadiths, which included reports from the Prophet Muhammad, his predecessors, and companions. His Musannaf is the second largest hadith collection ever compiled, containing over 37,000 hadiths covering a wide range of topics including controversial historical events. He was regarded as a reliable transmitter and taught many important students who contributed to hadith sciences. His work remains a key source for Islamic jurisprudence and history. He died in 235 AH (849 CE).
