Thuwayba mawlāt Abī Lahab

ثويبة مولاة أبي لهب

mawlāt Abī Lahab (freedwoman of Abū Lahab)

d. 626 CE

First foster mother of the Prophet ﷺ (nursed him for the first few days/weeks after birth). She was a freed slave of Abū Lahab — having brought the news of the Prophet's ﷺ birth to him, he freed her in his joy. She also nursed Ḥamza ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (Prophet's uncle) and Abū Salama (later husband of Umm Salama). The Prophet ﷺ honoured her throughout his life and Khadīja tried to buy her freedom (she was already free by then). Died in 7 AH (628 CE).
