Malik ibn Anas
Abu Abd Allah · Imam Malik
Malik ibn Anas was a prominent Islamic jurist and hadith scholar from Medina, founder of the Maliki school of jurisprudence and compiler of the Muwatta, one of the earliest hadith collections.
Malik ibn Anas was born circa 711 CE in Medina into the Humayr clan of the Banu Taym tribe, part of the Quraysh. He was a leading scholar of hadith and jurisprudence during the early Abbasid period, studying under notable teachers such as Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri and Ja'far al-Sadiq. Malik compiled the Muwatta, a foundational hadith collection and legal text, which became the basis of the Maliki school, one of the four major Sunni madhhabs. His jurisprudential views were highly influential across North Africa, al-Andalus, Egypt, and other regions. Malik died in 795 CE, leaving a lasting legacy as a jurist and scholar revered in Sunni tradition.
