Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī was the grandson of the Prophet Muḥammad and a key figure in early Islamic history, renowned for his martyrdom at the Battle of Karbala. He is revered for his piety and sacrifice, especially within Shia Islam.

Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī was born in 626 CE in Medina to Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatima bint Muhammad, making him a grandson of the Prophet Muḥammad. He belonged to the Banu Hashim clan of the Quraysh tribe and was raised in the Prophet's household. During the First Fitna, he supported his father Ali and later recognised the peace treaty between his brother Hasan and Mu'awiya. After Mu'awiya's death, Husayn refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid, leading to his journey towards Kufa. His caravan was intercepted, and he was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE, an event that became central to Shia identity and Islamic history. His martyrdom is commemorated annually during Muharram, especially on the day of Ashura.
