mishkat_al_masabih:4264وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِفَضَالَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ: مَا لِي أَرَاكَ شَعِثًا؟ قَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَنْهَانَا عَنْ كَثِيرٍ مِنَ الإِرفاه قَالَ: مَالِي لَا أَرَى عَلَيْكَ حِذَاءً؟ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نحتفي أَحْيَانًا. رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُد
‘Abdallah b. Buraida told that a man asked Fadala b. ‘Ubaid why it was he saw him dishevelled and he replied that God's messenger had forbidden them to indulge much in luxury. He asked why it was he saw him unshod and he replied that God's messenger used to command them to go barefoot at times. Abu Dawud transmitted it.
